Gold Coast: Where and what to eat

There are hundreds of restaurants on the Gold Coast to choose from and all offering great service and food. Gold Coast restaurants make full use of the varied local produce that comes from the land and sea. Combine that with the fast developing Gold Coast Tourism and the migrants that have settled here from all over the world and you have one of the best areas to eat in Australia.

Eating out on the Gold Coast is more than just refuelling. It's a cultural experience influenced by the transient nature of its population, and its subtropical location. Dishes here are influenced by cuisine from all corners of the globe, but Gold Coast restaurateurs also make the most of local produce like Moreton Bay Bugs and other fresh seafood, as well as delicious tropical fruits. The warm weather is perfect for alfresco dining, which is a feature of restaurants here.

Restaurants in the Circular Quay train terminal building by the ferry wharves are more designed for fast turnover than for leisurely dining. One restaurant at the Quay, City Extra, is open all hours.

The Rocks district

Chinatown

If you fancy Chinese food, head towards the southern end of the city centre. There's a host of restaurants in the Dixon St area (near the Sydney Entertainment Centre and in the Haymarket district). Some of the restaurants here are open until late. It's best to have a dining guide when looking for appropriate restaurants in the Rocks district. Some of these restaurants may be hiding in hotels. One of Sydney's more distinguished restaurants for fine dining is Rockpool on George St at the Rocks.

Within walking distance

If you're in the city centre, you would be within walking distance of a number of these Sydney restaurants including those at Chinatown, at the Rocks, and around Circular Quay.

If dining out at night, remember that some Sydney restaurants close early, so plan accordingly.

Check with your hotel for restaurant locations and how to get there.

Variety of restaurant fare

There's a wide variety of dining fare in Sydney, and for those so inclined, yes, there's also McDonald's, Hungry Jacks, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell...

If you're in an apartment or house with kitchen facilities, you may want to do a bit of cooking yourself.
